NATIONAL CHILDREN’S DAY

By on June 1, 2016

National children’s day in Pemba is bigger than Birthdays and Christmas for the Mozambican children.
Now marked a public holiday on the first of June, Over 6,000 kids walk miles to the Iris gates for a bowl of rice and chicken! Chicken is such a delicacy here, a child may get it once or twice a year if lucky. These beautiful kids line up outside the gates at sunrise waiting to be let into the excitement and to feed their little bellies.

Most of these kids get one meal a day. Some only one a week.
We, as Harvest students, got to serve them food, play games, hand out lollies and give them hugs!
It was an absolute blast, I got a few photos in the morning and then ended up serving in the kitchen for all the afternoon, which was a beautiful experience! These kids have won my heart…
