THIS IS IRIS ALICE SPRINGS

By on November 22, 2023

Here is the second episode of our documentary series, THIS IS IRIS.

With more episodes to follow showcasing different bases around the world.
This episode features our Iris Alice Spring Base in Outback Australia.

In 2021, as the Covid-19 pandemic presented its challenges, and after the safe arrival of our son, Isaiah, my family and I found ourselves in a rather unique situation. Due to Covid restrictions, leaving Australia wasn’t an option. However, this unexpected turn of events ultimately proved to be a blessing in disguise. It provided us with a remarkable opportunity to reconnect with friends and volunteer at the Iris Alice Springs base in the remote outback of central Australia, where we spent two meaningful months as a family.

Our time at Iris Alice Springs, with base leaders Katy and Daniel Spakman, was truly eye-opening. The locals warmly embraced us, and we felt honoured to serve the Church while immersing ourselves in the culture of the Indigenous Australian Community. Grace turned 3 during the trip and Isaiah was 10 months old. Both enjoyed the red dirt, the desert landscapes and dream like terrain.

Initially, our goal was to capture a brief overview of the base, but this evolved into a 20-minute episode for our documentary series “This is Iris.” Throughout this documentary, we had the privilege to share the incredible stories and experiences we encountered during our time at Iris Alice Springs.

Fast forward to October 2023, and we are thrilled to provide you with an update on the remarkable work being carried out at the base.

Every week, on Thursdays and Sundays, individuals come together at the base to share meals, and any surplus is distributed to those in need living in the Aboriginal town camps. Sunday evenings hold a special significance, as meals are directly distributed to the town camps, including many hungry children. Following this, an outreach service is conducted, allowing the entire neighbourhood to participate in worship and hear the gospel preached in their own language.

In the past year alone, Iris Alice Springs has distributed an astonishing 10,500 meals from their base. Furthermore, they have provided 3.5 tonnes of blankets, 2.5 tonnes of clothing, and over 1,000 Bibles to those in need.

Our time at Iris Alice Springs with Katy and Daniel has left an indelible mark on our hearts, and we are immensely grateful for the opportunity to visit and make new friends.
We hope this new episode featuring this beautiful family inspires you, raises awareness, and fosters your love and appreciation for the Aboriginal communities of Australia.

With much love, The Brewers
