This short film unveils the work of our Iris team in the alleyways of some of Fortaleza’s most notorious neighbourhoods, plagued by drugs, violence, and poverty.
A few years ago, James and I embarked on this project. Grace was only 1 year old, and as a family, we were privileged to witness firsthand the blessings this base brings to their community.
While we are no strangers to slums and favelas, I distinctly remember a fresh wave of compassion hitting my heart upon seeing the desperation of the children and families seemingly bound by the constraints of poverty. Amidst these shadows, the burning flame of love radiated through the Iris Team’s unconditional efforts, and the transformative testimonies of restoration against all odds.
Walking through the stone-paved streets, I was taken aback by the open display of substance abuse in broad daylight.
There was no attempt to hide it; instead, groups seemed entirely consumed by their desperation, with no concern for onlookers. My heart sank as I tried to fathom what it must feel like to be in their shoes—often judged and overlooked. But then there was our team—sitting in the gutters with them, offering hot food and comfort, taking the time to see the person beneath the rags, valuing them for who they are.
There were no rush or hidden agendas from the team. And on that night, those on the streets felt accepted, loved, seen, and dignified.
This documentary offers an intimate glimpse into some of the missionaries’ lives which are driven by an unshakeable belief in Jesus’ love for every individual, seeking to restore dignity and hope to the downtrodden.
They exemplify the church’s role beyond the four walls, revealing that amidst the darkness, love and faith can transform the most broken of hearts. To them this isn’t a sacrifice; it’s a privilege.
